Title: The Ten Matters Which Invalidate A Person’s Islam (Nawaqid al-Islam)
Understanding the Boundaries of Faith Every Muslim understands that physical purity, such as Wudu (ablution), can be easily invalidated or “broken” by certain actions. However, many people are unaware that faith itself also has nullifiers. In Islamic theology, these are known as Nawaqid al-Islam (The Nullifiers of Islam).
Committing one of these actions can remove a person from the fold of Islam. Therefore, learning about these ten matters is absolutely essential for every Muslim—not so we can judge others, but so we can safeguard our own hearts, words, and actions.
The 10 Nullifiers of Islam Based on the clear evidences from the Holy Quran and the authentic Sunnah, Islamic scholars have summarized the actions that invalidate a person’s faith into ten main categories:
1. Shirk (Associating Partners with Allah) Directing any act of worship—such as praying, slaughtering, or making vows—to anyone other than Allah (SWT) is the greatest sin in Islam. Allah says, “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills” (Quran 4:48).
2. Setting Up Intermediaries Believing that you cannot pray directly to Allah and must instead use saints, deceased individuals, or idols as “middlemen” to answer your prayers or grant you success.
3. Doubting the Disbelief of Polytheists A Muslim must firmly believe in the truth of Islam. Doubting that those who commit major Shirk or actively reject the message of Islam are upon falsehood contradicts the core message of the Quran.
4. Believing Another Guidance is Superior Believing that the laws, guidance, or systems created by human beings are more perfect, fair, or superior to the guidance and Shariah brought by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
5. Hating What the Prophet (PBUH) Brought Hating any established aspect of the religion that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) brought—even if the person actually practices it themselves—nullifies their faith. Allah says, “That is because they disliked what Allah revealed, so He rendered worthless their deeds” (Quran 47:9).
6. Mocking the Religion Joking, mocking, or ridiculing Allah, the Prophet (PBUH), the Quran, the Hereafter, or any established Islamic ruling is a direct violation of faith.
7. Magic (Sihr) Practicing magic, supporting it, or being pleased with it is an act of disbelief. The Quran clearly states that the angels who taught magic warned people beforehand, saying, “We are only a test, so do not disbelieve” (Quran 2:102).
8. Assisting Disbelievers Against Muslims Aiding, supporting, or allying with those who are actively fighting to destroy Muslims or the religion of Islam.
9. Believing Some are Exempt from the Shariah Believing that certain “spiritually elevated” people do not have to follow the laws of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) (for example, believing someone is so holy they no longer need to pray Salah or fast) is a major nullifier.
10. Turning Away from the Religion Completely turning away from the religion of Allah by utterly refusing to learn its basic, obligatory fundamentals and refusing to act upon them.
Protect Your Faith Through Knowledge The absolute best way to protect ourselves and our families from falling into these nullifiers is by seeking authentic Islamic knowledge. Ignorance is the root cause of many of these major sins.
